History of Block Panchayat

Thodupuzha Block Panchayat is one of the major local self-government institutions in the Idukki district. Formed as part of strengthening the Panchayati Raj system in Kerala, it serves as the hub for rural development activities in the Thodupuzha region.


 

The Thodupuzha Block was established in the late 1950s and early 1960s as part of Community Development Projects. Subsequently, its role was strengthened as a Block Panchayat under Kerala's three-tier Panchayat system. Official records related to the office modernization indicate that this institution has a legacy of over 60 years.


 

Thodupuzha Block Panchayat plays a vital role in coordinating agricultural development, rural roads, drinking water schemes, healthcare, education, women empowerment, and the employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGS). It functions as an intermediate local self-government entity connecting various Grama Panchayats to implement developmental initiatives.


 

Over time, Thodupuzha Block Panchayat has undertaken numerous development projects. In 2019, the office complex was upgraded with modern amenities, and a solar power project was implemented. It also achieved ISO certification the same year, which it has maintained ever since.
